The Claim

President Trump said that fraud concerns may force him to hold another presidential election after November.

Emerging story

In August 2020, President Trump stated that since the COVID pandemic has caused many people to become afraid of voting at the polls, and since mail-in ballots must travel through the US mail system and are thus subject to a greater degree of election-rigging than would otherwise be possible with the conventional system, he could force a redo of the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation shows that Trump does not have the authority to force a redo of the November 2020 presidential election. An article in Reuters says that a “redo” of a presidential election has never occurred in the history of the country. While Trump insists that mail-in voting will lead to widespread voter fraud, the documented cases of fraudulent voting by mail is rare. Despite these facts, Trump claims to know otherwise. While the President did state that he should get a “redo” of the upcoming election should he lose, his claim that he can do such a thing is in fact, false.
