Emerging story
During the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to determine the party’s candidate for the US presidential election, rumors began to circulate on social media, specifically Twitter, that the DNC had omitted the words “under God” from the US pledge of allegiance at the beginning of each of the Convention’s four nights.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. Here is video of the pledge of allegiance being said in full all four nights of the Convention— on camera. However, off camera, on August 17th, the first night of the Convention, two caucuses —the LGBT caucus and the Muslim Delegates Assembly— began their meetings with the pledge of allegiance and omitted the phrase "under God." These were decisions made by the members of these caucuses and not necessarily representative of the feelings of the DNC as a whole. Approximately 72% of the American public self-report as following Judeo-Christian faiths, which is likely why the claim that the DNC omitted the phrase caused such a stir.
However, individual caucuses choosing to omit the phrase does not mean that the Democratic party monolithically chose to do the same.
