Fake Photo: Eddie Murphy Eating Fries Off Model

In Paris in the 1980s, someone took a photo of Eddie Murphy eating steak frites off a nude model’s backside.

In August 2020, social media users began circulating the claim. Some even called the photo “iconic.”
Misbar’s Analysis
The man in the photo does look similar to American actor Eddie Murphy. The camera filter makes the picture seem like it was taken in the 1980’s, when Murphy was at the peak of his fame, so he did have the money and style to take a picture like this. It has been a common repost on a variety of websites since first going viral.
However, Misbar’s investigation found that the photo was actually first published in 2007 on Simon Says, a French gastronomy blog. We conducted a reverse image search and found that the actual subjects in the photo are unknown and are uncredited in the blog. The author says that the picture was taken by Christine Marquise, who took several other photos for the blog. Not all of her pictures are taken with the same 80’s style filter, but many are.
In the post, the blog does not actually say where the picture was taken. It does say that the author ordered steak from La Gavroche, a French restaurant in London, and ate it on a rooftop.
