The Claim

The video below shows a scene from a protest in Belarus.

Emerging story

In August 2020, social media users posted the video in praise of the protest.

Misbar’s Analysis

Belarus has experienced widespread protests following what many believe to be President Alexander Lukashenko’s rigged reelection results. Tens of thousands of protestors filled the streets of Minsk.

However, while the protests are real, Misbar’s investigation found that the video of a ball with Lukashenko’s face painted on it bouncing down the street is fake. We conducted a reverse image search using stills from the video and found that it was initially posted on August 19, 2020 on the Instagram page of Russian filmmaker and FFX artist Alexander Ivanov.

The video was created digitally in support of the protests.
