Pelosi Did Not Call to Bar Overseas Troops from Voting
The Claim
In 2020, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said U.S. troops stationed overseas should no longer be allowed to vote in U.S. elections.
Emerging story
On Aug. 11, 2020, an online publication called ‘America’s Last Line of Defense’ published an article stating that US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had said that American troops stationed overseas should no longer be able to cast their votes in U.S. elections because “they don’t even live here.” In addition, it said she said that that they had worked abroad for so long, they had “become foreigners.” This claim was subsequently circulated on social media, specifically Twitter.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. America’s Last Line of Defense is a satire site, and labels itself as such even though its articles often are presented as though they are factual and not satire at all. For this reason, its articles often go viral on social media among the more credulous segment of the population. Thus, such claims need debunking, and so for not the first and probably not the last time Misbar has engaged with Last Line of Defense.
