Emerging story
In August 2020, a viral Facebook post was published that heavily implied that the father of the alleged shooter in Kenosha, Wisc., who killed two protesters, is employed by the Kenosha sheriff’s department. The claim has subsequently gone viral on social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation shows that the claim is false. The Misbar team went to the Kenosha county employee database and did not find anyone with the last name “Rittenhouse” employed there. Furthermore, we contacted the office personally and were told that no one employed there works under that name. Additionally, the alleged shooter, Kyle Rittenhouse, traveled to Kenosha from Illinois, where he lives with his mother.
