The Claim

NASA published a fake photo of Mars that is actually a digitally manipulated photo of Bulgaria.

Emerging story

Social media users shared the claim in August 2020, claiming that it proves NASA is lying about space exploration.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the claim, which ironically purports to expose fake news, is false. NASA has not published the photo on its website or any of its social media platforms. It does publish images of Mars on the Robotic Mars Exploration portion of its main page and on the multimedia portion of its Mars Exploration Program site, but none of them match the image.

The fake claim seems to be part of a constellation of conspiracies about space exploration.

These conspiracy theories include the flat earth theory, the moon landing hoax theory, and apparently the theory that either there is no Mars or we have no photos of it.
