Emerging story

In early September 2020, social media users began sharing the picture with a caption reading: “Muslim SP in Maharashtra becomes first IPS through Urdu medium! Who on the very first day left her police dress code and adopted an Islamic dress code!! Congratulations to the Shiv Sena Government!! The contribution of Shiv Sena to Gajhwa-e-Hind will also be commendable."

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the caption is false. We conducted a reverse image search, which led to several news articles reporting on the image. It actually depicts a 14-year-old student, Sahrish Kanwal, who became Deputy Superintendent of Police “for a day” as part of the annual Women’s Day celebration.

We also found a video of the event.

Since the photo actually depicts a 14-year-old girl and not a police officer, the claim is false.
