The Claim

Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden, proposed that all Americans be required to learn Spanish if her husband wins the election.

Emerging story

On August 20, 2020, Taters Gonna Tate published an article, “Dr. Jill Biden: ‘All Americans Will Be Required to Learn Spanish When We Win.’”

By early September 2020, the claim had gone viral on social media, with many users expressing rage at the idea of being forced to learn Spanish.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the claim is false. According to their website, “Tatersgonnatate.com is a subsidiary of the America’s Last Line of Defense network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery, or as Snopes called it before they lost their war on satire: Junk News.”

The article’s byline calls it “Satire and/or Conservative Fan Fiction.”

Jill Biden, a former English professor, has said she is learning Spanish using the Babbel app. She has also met with Latinx politicians to discuss her husband’s candidacy.

However, she did not say that all Americans will be required to learn Spanish if Joe Biden wins the election.
