Emerging story
The Black Lives Matter protests/riots, which rocked 55 cities in the US this summer 2020, are still going strong in Portland, Oregon, where riot police have been battling protestors for three months. After rioters attacked the Portland mayor’s neighborhood and ransacked his building specifically, news circulated on social media and in the mainstream that the mayor was planning to move out of the city to avoid the violence.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. While Mayor Wheeler has said that he will be moving out of his current home, law mandates that the mayor of Portland must reside within the city limits, so it is likely that he will simply be moving to a safer, perhaps undisclosed location within his city. It is still shocking that the chief authority of a city is being forced to move his home to avoid violence that he himself seemingly must have the power to put an end to, but that is another story entirely.
