The Claim

Following Hawaii’s legalization of physician-assisted death, state leaders bought 30 "passing assistance pods."

Emerging story

On August 15th 2020, the Facebook page The State of Hawaii posted on the topic of Hawaii’s legalization of assisted suicide the year before, claiming that the state had ordered 30 "pods" which individuals can lock themselves into and which would kill them and “shrink wrap” their body to be disposed of according to their wishes. This claim went viral on social media, specifically Twitter, and has continued to circulate into September.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation into this claim reveals it to be false. The Facebook page, The State of Hawaii, is not an official state Facebook page and is only a parody page. The real state of Hawaii page is called State of Hawaii and has many social media outreach pages, listed here.
