The Claim

Canada recently criminalized COVID-19 restrictions.

Emerging story

The claim went viral in September 2020, with many Facebook users rejoicing in the ostensible law.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the viral claim is false. The link used in many of the posts goes to a site called the “Republic of Kanata,” a “sovereign nation established on January 15, 2015 under Common Law jurisdiction.” While perhaps the Republic of Kanata has sought to strike down COVID-19-related safety measures, like most countries, Canada does not recognize sovereign citizens.

Further, every Canadian province and territory that we checked still has some form of pandemic safety measures in place. For example, Ottawa has a temporary mandatory mask mandate still in place

Nova Scotia similarly still has restrictive measures in place to help quell the pandemic.

The “law” purportedly passed by the Republic of Kanata has no basis in Canada’s official legal practices.
