Emerging story
Social media users claimed that the Swiss authorities have officially confirmed that PCR tests used to diagnose COVID-19 are fake and have been circulating in multiple posts on Facebook. The users spreading claimed used the Swiss public health authority Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and Swissmedic, the national supervisory body for medical products, as the source.
Users posted a very long post alongside screenshots of a German-language document bearing the Swissmedic logo, dated May 20, 2020.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation finds the circulating claim false. It’s obvious that Swissmedic report was taken out of context and misused; the actual report gives weight to the efficacy of the PCR tests in detecting novel coronavirus. According to the Swiss full report, PCR tests are used to demonstrate the presence of nucleic acid in connection with the new coronavirus and hence an infection with the virus.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also stated on its website that PCR tests remain “gold standard” for “clinical detection” of coronavirus’ genetic material and promote its use.
