Emerging story
During a rally in Ohio on September 21, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Nevada voters did not need to have their mail ballots signed and if they did sign them, they would not need to be verified.
Users across social media quickly disputed the claim, and blasted the President for making such falsehoods.
However, some other social media users are repeating his claims.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that the claim is false. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak signed a law in August 2020 that expanded mail voting. The law details procedures for managing signatures and the requirements for allowing voters to verify them. However, the requirement to have a signature was not changed.
The law requires mail ballots to include valid voter signatures, which must be verified by election officials. Nevada has a system in place that not only verifies signatures, but also prevents voters from casting more than one ballot.
The Nevada Secretary of State posted an infographic which highlights what’s needed for a vote to count in the state. Facts #4 and 5 discuss the signature requirement.
Las Vegas Weekly also posted an article that highlighted what is needed for Nevada voters to have their mail in ballots count, including a valid signature.
