Misbar’s Analysis

Soup cans have plausible deniability. Unlike bricks, soup cans are inconspicuous, as nobody would expect them to be weaponized.

In addition to soup cans, Trump also stated that protestors have been throwing canned tuna, specifically Bumble Bee brand. In a tweet, Bumble Bee’s Twitter said that people should eat the fish rather than throw it.

Misbar’s investigation found that it’s hard to know exactly how widespread soup throwing is, but it doesn’t seem to be as ubiquitous as Trump says. Portland police said that there have been soup cans found amongst protestors. Cans of beans have also been found. Some journalists contradict the mayor’s statement, saying that there have been no reports of soup-can throwing.
