Emerging story
In September 2020, a Facebook post was shared across social media which claimed that Daniel Cameron, the Attorney General of Kentucky who oversaw the prosecution of the Breonna Taylor case, married the granddaughter of Senator Mitch McConnell.
Users across social media continued to push this claim.
Users across social media also pushed the idea that Cameron’s wife was McConnel’s niece.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar team has determined that this claim is false. Cameron did marry over the summer, and McConnell was in attendance. However, there is no evidence to support the claim that Cameron’s wife is related to McConnell in any way. The pictures being circulated across social media are of Cameron’s wife, which has likely created some unsupported validity to this claim. Previously, Cameron was legal counsel for McConnell, which may give reason for the senator being in attendance to the wedding.
The claim that McConnell is related to Cameron’s wife was contested by the communications director for Cameron’s office. A tweet from Phillip M. Bailey, a correspondent for Kentucky public radio, also refuted this claim:
Despite the senator’s attendance at the wedding, and that the pictures in the social media posts do depict Cameron and his wife Makenze Evans, the claim that Evans has any relation to McConnell is false.
