The Claim

Supreme Court Justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett said that breastfeeding is a form of child molestation.

Emerging story

The claim went viral in October 2020, particularly on Facebook.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that there is no evidence that Barrett, whose nomination will be voted on this Thursday, October 22, said the attributed quote.

While Barrett has been criticized by some for her conservative take on sexuality, no source besides the meme indicates that she equates breastfeeding with molestation. We searched through transcripts of her speeches and public comments, published works, and social media pages, and found nothing even close. However, a similar meme not attributed to Barrett was posted on the r/InsaneParents subreddit just days before the claim about Barrett went viral.

Further, Barrett is a practicing Catholic. The Catholic faith is known to support breastfeeding.
