Emerging story
On October 12th, 2020, President Donald Trump retweeted a post from Oscar the Midnight Rider 1111. In the post, Trump claimed: “Hidden Biden and Obama may have had Seal Team 6 killed!” The post includes a photo of a suspected unit with faces blurred for privacy and security reasons. It also links to a story that includes additional information on the claim from a CIA whistleblower.
Since this initial conversation, the Twitter account associated with the original post has been suspended. In addition, Trump’s post received a lot of criticism as many people across Twitter expressed outrage at the implication of the retweeted article.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar’s investigation found that the unit died in an incident that occurred on August 6, 2011. On this date, roughly 38 people were killed during an operation in Tangi Valley, and of these individuals, many had been involved in the killing of Osama bin Laden. Their deaths led to much speculation.
The context of this claim is part of a conspiracy theory that the Obama administration was seeking to cover up a deal that involved staging the death of Osama bin Laden and needed to kill the Navy SEALs involved. However, there is no evidence to indicate that Biden was involved in leaking the information that led to the deaths of these service members. There is also no evidence linking President Barack Obama to the leaked information or bin Laden's staged death, as we have previously debunked. Furthermore, there is not sufficient information or details to believe there was a pre-planned or coordinated attack planned to target these individuals.
