The Claim

The United States has the cleanest water in the world.

Emerging story

During the final presidential debate on October 22, 2020, President Donald Trump said that the United States has “the cleanest water.” The claim soon went viral on social media, with many contesting its veracity. 

Misbar’s Analysis

According to a study conducted by Yale University’s Environmental Performance Index, the U.S. is actually ranked 26th in terms of water cleanliness. 

Sanitation is ranked at 35, while drinking water is ranked at 23. 

Other studies support these findings as well. Sanitation and clean water is currently inaccessible for approximately 2 million U.S. residents.

Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are ranked as the top countries with the cleanest water.
