On October 23, 2020, a Twitter user posted a photo of Mark Kelly with a caption stating “EXCLUSIVE: I have obtained yearbook photos showing Democrat Arizona Senate candidate Mark Kelly dresses as Adolf Hitler during his time at the Merchant Marine Academy.”
Twitter users including Donald Trump Jr. began to disperse this post across networks with outraged commentary.
Misbar’s Analysis
The photo, published by the National File, is claimed to be of Mark Kelly in 1985 at a Halloween Party at the Merchant Marine Academy. However, there is no evidence that supports that the person in this photo is Mark Kelly. The identifying source site has yet to provide any additional information to support the theory.
Many individuals have also provided additional accounts to refute this claim. Kelly’s campaign manager Jen Cox reported, “There aren’t pictures of Mark… The story is false.”
Furthermore, Kelly’s classmate Jennifer Boykin stated, “I attended this event. This is not Mark in any of these photos.”
Without definitive facial recognition results or evidence to this claim, Misbar's investigation finds it to be false.
