The Claim

The video depicts thousands of Muslims protesting against France.

Emerging story

As Macron's Islam comments sparked protests a video showing thousands of Muslims protesting has been widely circulating on social media. Several users shared the video and claimed it showed protests by Chechen Muslims against France.
Social media is flooded with hashtags to boycott France and French products. The video attracted thousands of social media users.

Misbar’s Analysis

Our investigation finds that the circulating video is not related to the recent protests against France. The video circulating has been online since November 2019. The video was taken in Sana’a, Yemen during Prophet Mohammad's birth anniversary celebration.

A rift between France and Muslim nations is growing after French President Emmanuel Macron said earlier this month that Islam was in “crisis”.
Tension escalated after French teacher Samuel Paty was killed on October 16 near his school in broad daylight. He had shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to his students. Since the crime, French officials were perceived as linking the killing to Islam.
As hashtags against France are trending on social media, there seems to be a lot of misinformation circulating.
