The Claim

Joe Biden bragged about the Democrats forming the “most extensive voter fraud organization.”

Emerging story

It’s been a troubling election in the U.S., full of allegations of voter fraud and suppression. On October 24th, Joe Biden was interviewed by Pod Save America, a fairly popular podcast. At some point in the interview, Biden did say the quote. It was picked up by several right-wing media websites and social media accounts, all of whom took the quote out of context.

Misbar’s Analysis

If taken out of context, this quote implies that democrats have created some kind of specialty voter-fraud organization. However, Biden was saying that the organization is against voter fraud (it’s unknown what organization he was referring to). He includes voter suppression amongst voter fraud.

Voter suppression has a long history in the U.S., from people toting guns in front of poll centers to gerrymandering. It hasn’t gone away and is a major issue in this election, especially with the influx of mail-in voting due to the pandemic. The California GOP was recently reprimanded for setting up fake drop-off boxes, while some mail containing pro-Trump absentee ballots were allegedly dumped into a river. Biden’s campaign has pushed people to vote in greater numbers, especially people of color. Biden’s efforts may or may not be the most extensive history, but they are nonetheless efforts to fight voter suppression.
