The Claim

A video depicts French police arresting a Muslim girl and forcing her to take her headscarf off.

Emerging story

A one-minute video of a policeman thrashing a woman has gone viral on social media claiming that French police have arrested a young Muslim girl and forcibly tried to take off her hijab.

The video was shared with a caption read, “French police arrest young Muslim girl and forcibly try to take her hijab off. You can see her blood on the floor when she’s brought down. So much for the West’s love for the freedom of expression and democracy.”

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar's investigation found the circulating claim false. Our reverse image search found that the incident occurred in Calgary, Canada in 2017. The Police officer seen in the video is Alex Dunn, who is currently on trial for assault causing bodily harm. Also, the woman in the video was identified as Dalia Kafi, who was arrested for violating a court order.

The clip is three years and not related to Muslims nor France. News websites republished the video of the violent 2017 arrest in Calgary this week as part of a court proceeding is receiving backlash online.
Dunn was charged with assault causing bodily harm and was relieved from his CPS duty with pay. He is now performing administrative duties.
