The Claim

Iowa allowed 300 people in its 2nd Congressional District to vote more than once.

Emerging story

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle that Iowa allowed 300 people in its 2nd Congressional District to vote more than once.
Users and news outlets across social media disputed the claim, noting the error.

Misbar’s Analysis

The Misbar team has determined that this claim is false. While speaking with Laura Ingraham, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) started claims of possible voter fraud when he referred to Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District race between Democratic Party candidate Rita Hart and Republican Party candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks, saying: "I don’t have all the facts but I (sic) was just reported that they have allowed a little over 300 people to re-vote and now we’re behind."

According to election officials in Iowa, no one re-voted. While there were reported problems from one of Iowa’s precincts which were recorded on a spreadsheet, it was attributed to human-error, and was corrected once noted.

"We reported wrong results on Election Night," said Jasper County Auditor and Elections Commissioner Dennis Parrott. "It was human error, like a lot of things that happen."

After noticing the error, Parrott notified the office of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate.

Pate’s office then had Jasper County staff re-check to make sure the count was accurate. Pate also ordered a hand-count audit of the votes before the canvasses to ensure vote counting was truthful.

The corrected unofficial numbers had the Democratic candidate Hart leading by 162 votes.
