Emerging story
Following the announcement that Kamala Harris became the Vice-President-Elect of the United States, multiple news articles were published stating that she was the first female, first Black and first South Asian Vice-President-Elect. Some social media users think that she is also the first person of color (POC) to be Vice-President-Elect.
Users across social media continued to push this claim.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar team has determined that this claim is false. While Kamala Harris is America’s first female, first Black and first South Asian Vice-President-Elect, she will not be the first POC Vice President. Charles Curtis, who served as Vice President under Herbert Hoover from 1929-1933 was the “first American of Indian ancestry to reach high office.” Born in Kansas, the former Vice President was part Native American and was the first POC to serve in the role.
