The Claim

Men suffer from depression more than women.

Emerging story

As the year 2020 continues to be challenging for many, some on social media claim that men are more depressed than women.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression. According to Harvard Health, women also have higher rates of seasonal affective disorder, depressive symptoms in bipolar disorder, and dysthymia (chronic depression).

It remains unclear why a gender gap exists in depression, but the mental health gender divide seems to exist around the world.

Recent studies out of Spain also show the higher prevalence of poor mental health among women of all ages and across all social groups.

The coronavirus pandemic has been especially challenging for women. According to the United Nations, across the globe, women earn less, save less, hold less secure jobs, and are more likely to be employed in the informal sector. They have less access to social protections and are the majority of single-parent households, all traits that could add even more to the uneven rates of depression.
