Misbar’s Analysis

Earlier this year, Trump announced “Operation Warp Speed,” which provided federal funding to vaccine developers. The intent was to develop a vaccine at “warp speed” by providing incentives. A few days after the election, Pfizer announced that they have had some promising results on their COVID-19 vaccine. Trump alleged that Pfizer had been holding back the vaccine, so as to deny him, in his words, a “win.” Vice Presiident Mike Pence claimed credit for it, too. Pfizer responded, denying Pence’s claim of involvement.

Misbar’s investigation found that Pfizer researchers didn’t receive any US funding, as they aren’t part of the US – the vaccine researchers are in Germany and funded by the German government. Even if it were to be released before the election, any claim that Trump was involved would be inaccurate. However, it’s worth noting that the vaccine hasn’t been released to the public at all, as it’s still being tested. Federal funding may also be required to distribute the vaccine.
