The Claim

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo forced seniors into COVID-19-infected nursing homes, whether they had the virus or not.

Emerging story

Cuomo just received an Emmy for his television reports on the coronavirus. This has resulted in a large amount of outcry from his opponents. Many of them mention Cuomo’s alleged responsibility for the deaths of thousands of New York senior citizens.

Misbar’s Analysis

It’s probable that their sources are from websites summarizing his recent ease of restrictions. One of these lifted restrictions relates to nursing homes. Cuomo implemented a policy that states that patients who are suspected of having the virus may be admitted into nursing homes, so long as they are not showing any outward symptoms.

This is an attempt to lighten the load on hospitals, who are reaching their limit in hospital beds. However, this set of restrictions never forced people into nursing homes – nursing homes can and have refuse patients – and hasn’t been correlated to increase in deaths.

Cuomo has also been criticized for limiting visitations in nursing homes who have an infection within 28 days. These have faced scrutiny, including protests from family members. They had since been revised.
