The Claim

President-Elect Joe Biden received “dumps of votes” late at night in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, indicating election fraud.

Emerging story

On November 29, 2020, Senator Rand Paul tweeted about “data dumps” in four states alongside a graph ostensibly supporting his claim.

On December 2, 2020, President Donald Trump posted a 46-minute video in which he made several claims about the 2020 presidential election. One of these claims is that President-Elect Joe Biden received fraudulent “dumps of votes.”

After Trump posted his video, the claim went viral on social media.

Misbar’s Analysis

Trump repeated Rand’s claim in his video, saying that these ballot dumps constitute fraud. Due to a "morning vote dump,” he said, “all of a sudden I go from winning a lot to losing a tight race. It's corrupt.”

Misbar’s investigation found that this is false. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this election had a much higher rate of mail-in ballots than usual. Mail-in ballots take longer to count. Delayed reporting of ballot tallying does not constitute fraud. Rather, it indicates that the election process is being followed with extreme caution

The states where “vote dumps” allegedly took place counted and reported votes all at once
