The Claim

Detox baths remove feces and other toxins through your feet.

Emerging story

Throughout history, many cultures have used different attempts to detoxify or cleanse toxins from our bodies. One of the latest claims is that we can pull toxins out of our feet in a special detoxification bath.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has discovered that there is no scientific evidence to support toxins leaving the feet from detoxifying foot baths. Many of the foot baths advertised claim that the treatment works by ionization. The ionizer, which is placed in the foot bath, releases ions through the water and into your body. Your cells are then energized by the ions and are finally able to release the toxins, oils, acids, fats, heavy metals, cellular debris and waste that have accumulated over your lifetime.

The color of the water in the footbath is supposed to indicate which toxins are being removed.

However, according to the American Council on Science and Health, the brown water comes from electrooxidation of iron, not toxins pulled from the feet. Inside of the black piece that sits in the bath is an iron coil and two terminals where an electrical current can be applied. The electricity causes the oxidation of iron and the product left in the foot bowl is rust.

According to Harvard Medical School, there is no scientific evidence that ionic changes in the environment can stimulate a discharge of toxins through pores in the feet — or any other part of the body, for that matter.
