The Claim

People who have allergies cannot get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Emerging story

Many on social media believe that if you have allergies, you should not get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that five people so far have had allergic reactions after getting the Pfizer’BioNTech vaccine. According to Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research in TheHill.com: “We are working hand in hand with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and we’ve actually been working closely with our United Kingdom colleagues, who of course reported the allergic reaction. I think we’ll be looking at all the data we can from each of these reactions to sort out exactly what happened, and we’ll also be looking to try to understand which component of the vaccine might be helping to produce them.”

According to the NewYorkTimes.com neither Moderna nor Pfizer-BioNTech reported serious problems with allergic reactions during their clinical studies, but when drugs or vaccines move out of trials and into broader distribution, rare side effects can emerge. For now, the FDA is saying the vaccines’ benefits outweigh the risks, but if you are allergic to any of the vaccine’s ingredients, you should not get the vaccine.

Overall, the claims are selective. People who have allergies can get either of the two authorized COVID-19 vaccines, but not if they ever had a severe allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the vaccine.
