Emerging story
On December 21, 2020, social media users discussed recent news related to the COVID-19 December 2020 stimulus package.
With this recent news, many began questioning the totals of the stimulus bill and why Americans were provided small numbers in comparison to foreign totals.
Misbarโs Analysis
According to recent news in December 2020, the most recent stimulus bill approved by Senate is projected to include some of the following totals:
- Extension of unemployment benefits up to $300 per week
- $600 stimulus payments for American making less than $75K in the previous tax year
- Various transportation and food stamp support
- $284 billion in Paycheck Protection Programs
- $10 billion in childcare development grants
- $10 billion for Postal Service relief
- Financial support for foreign countries including, but not limited to, $700 million to Sudan and $130 million to Nepal
Overall, the pandemic relief estimated to total to roughly $900 billion. Support from these funds are intended to enable those adversely impacted by the effects of COVID-19 to maintain sustainable lives as well as stimulate the economy overall.
However, the foreign aid funds are not part of the pandemic relief package. Rather, the relief package is part of a much larger $2.3 trillion spending bill to fund the U.S. government in 2021.
As such, Misbar finds this claim to be selective with accounts from the currently available information.
