The Claim

Jupiter and Saturn have aligned and the world is ending.

Emerging story

In a once in a lifetime astronomical event, Jupiter and Saturn have aligned. Together, they form an extra bright “star” in the sky. It’s also the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere.

Not only is it a cool-looking event, but it’s also signaling the apocalypse. Or the end of an age. Or an abundance of spiritual energy. Allegedly. There’s some dispute among the more mystical among us on the implications of the great conjunction (if there are any at all).

Misbar’s Analysis

The apocalypse theory is derived from some interpretations of the Mayan calendar. Previously, it was predicted that the world would end in 2012. After 2012 passed without incidence, some asserted that the Mayan calendar actually predicted that the world would end on December 21, 2020. As of December 22, the world is still intact. This theory was further peddled by a Christian pastor (it’s also his birthday).

The Great Conjunction is also said to have some effect on astrological signs. Astrology has been debunked on innumerable occasions throughout the years, yet it still remains popular amongst some groups.

As of the moment, the Great Conjunction has shown itself to be a rare and beautiful astronomical event, but little else. As of yet, humans are still on Earth.
