Emerging story
When the U.S. Capitol was taken over by rioters, rumors began circulating on social media that Vice President Mike Pence had been arrested.
Users across social media continued to push this claim.
While other social media users refuted it, claiming he had been evacuated instead.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar team has determined the claim is false. Once the U.S. Capitol became under siege, Vice President Mike Pence was ushered to a secure location by capitol police. Not only have there been no reports of this happening, but Mike Pence also continued to tweet following the alleged arrest, which he would not have been able to do while in police custody.
We condemn the violence that took place here in the strongest possible terms. We grieve the loss of life in these hallowed halls, as well as the injuries suffered by those who defended our Capitol today.

Later that evening, Mike Pence returned to the Senate to continue certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
Since there is no report of the Vice President being arrested, and he returned to the Senate later to continue his duties of certifying the 2020 Presidential election, we rate the claim as false.
