On December 29, 2020, Congressman-Elect Luke Letlow died of complications from the COVID-19 virus. Some are questioning how the virus could be deadly for someone relatively young and without underlying conditions. While Misbar could not find any social media users claiming that Letlow died from complications of the COVID-19 vaccine, a reader submitted the claim, saying that it's being spread widely in Louisiana. Some social media users have claimed that Letlow's death is an example of COVID-19 fatality inflatiion.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has discovered that Congressman-elect Luke Letlow did pass away from complications due to COVID-19. On December 18, 2021, he announced that he tested positive for the virus and was quarantining at home. His health began to deteriorate and on December 19th, he was admitted to St. Francis Medical Center, and eventually transferred to Ochsner LSU Health. It was at Ochsner LSU Health where he required a procedure to remove a blood clot caused by the COVID-19 virus according to TheNewsStar.com. A follow-up procedure for the blood clot seemed to be successful, but later the same day, Letlow died from a coronavirus-fueled heart attack. According to LSU Health Chancellor G.E. Ghali said in an interview: "He had no underlying conditions. It was just COVID." Letlow also never received the COVID-19 vaccine.
While COVID-19 primarily impacts the lungs and respiratory system, it can also wreak havoc on the heart according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Up to one in five patients with the illness end up with heart damage. Heart failure has been the cause of death in COVID-19 patients, even those without severe breathing problems. The American Heart Association is also concerned about heart damage related to COVID-19: “Nearly one-fourth of those hospitalized with COVID-19 have been diagnosed with cardiovascular complications, which have been shown to contribute to roughly 40% of all COVID-19-related deaths.”
COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. It appears that Congressman-Elect Letlow suffered heart damage from COVID-19, which caused his heart to fail.
