Emerging story
On January 13, 2021, the United States House of Representatives formally impeached U.S. President Donald Trump for "high crimes and misdemeanors" related to his role in the insurrection against the federal government at the U.S. Capitol, making him the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice.
The claim immediately went viral on social media.
Misbar’s Analysis
The Misbar team has determined that the claim is true. Only three U.S. presidents have been impeached in U.S. history: Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump.
In 1868, Andrew Johnson was impeached on charges breaching the Tenure of Office Act, which forbids the president to remove civil officers without senatorial consent. Johnson was acquitted on these charges by the U.S. Senate by just one vote.
In 1973, following the Watergate scandal, Richard Nixon chose to resign before Congress could vote on his impeachment.
In 1998, Bill Clinton was impeached, on charges of lying under oath over a statement about having a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern. He was too also acquitted by the U.S. Senate.
Donald Trump was impeached in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He was also acquitted by the U.S. Senate.
Now that Trump has been formally impeached again, he became the first U.S. president in history to be impeached twice.
