Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that John Sullivan is a civil rights activist and crowdfunded video journalist who was recently arrested for his part in the Capitol riot. Sullivan is the founder of the civil rights group Insurgence USA, whose self-proclaimed mission is to stop police brutality.

An affidavit of probable cause for Sullivan's arrest has been released. He is being charged in a criminal complaint with one felony count of interfering with law enforcement in connection with a civil disorder, as well as misdemeanor charges of unlawful entry and disorderly conduct.

According to KUTV News in Utah, who interviewed Sullivan after the storming of the Capitol, he was able to enter the Capitol through a broken window. On his YouTube channel, Jayden X, he released a 1 hour and 26 min video titled “Full Video: The Seige [sic] On United States Capitol” where he documents the storming of the Capitol.

According to the affidavit, as the crowd rushed the Capitol building, Sullivan declared: “We accomplished this shit. We did this together. Fuck yeah! We are all a part of this history,” and “Let’s burn this shit down.” Many see this as inciting violence. Sullivan has claimed in news interviews that he was only documenting the events there as a journalist, but prosecutors argue that he was actually a participant in the violence.

Regarding the claim that Sullivan is an Antifa leader, an article published by Max Blumenthal documents his relationship with BLM and Antifa.

The article states that “according to self-described BLM and anti-fascist activists familiar with the 26-year-old Sullivan, he is best known for his propensity for inspiring chaos, engaging in counterproductive tactics that often trigger arrests, and consistently undermining BLM objectives. From Salt Lake City to Portland to Washington, DC, left-wing activists consider him persona non grata.” Persona non grata means “an unacceptable or unwelcome person.”

These claims have been backed up by James Sullivan, John’s brother.

About his involvement with Antifa, John Sullivan said: "If people are saying I'm Antifa, as far as a terrorist organization, I'm not. Am I anti-fascist? We all are anti-fascist. And that's what we should all strive for being. I have my own organization, Insurgence USA, and that's what it is for. That's really what it is."

He believes he was the only non-Trump supporter in the crowd: "There were all of these people just listening to Trump, and then they just marched. It's not like a new group joined, another group came. They literally came from the MAGA protest, where Trump was, and went over there. There was no Antifa."

Sullivan is scheduled to appear in court in Utah on Friday at 4 p.m.
