The Claim

Riley June Williams, one of the people who broke into the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, has been arrested and is awaiting trial for stealing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's laptop.

Emerging story

Following the chaotic January 6th riot at the Capitol Building, Williams was one of the more than 100 people arrested due to the events of that day. According to the FBI, the 22-year-old Williams fled her home and attempted to go incognito, but was quickly discovered and arrested under suspicion of stealing (or assisting in stealing) Pelosi’s laptop.

Misbar’s Analysis

Although rumors have spread that Williams attempted to sell the stolen laptop to the Russian Intelligence agency (SVR), this has yet to be proven definitively. So far the evidence provided by the FBI is testimony from a former “romantic partner” that Williams “intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR."

Apparently the deal which Williams allegedly orchestrated didn’t happen due to “known reasons,” and the FBI has stated Williams either still has the computer or has destroyed it. Not that this matters anyway, because the stolen piece of hardware was only used for presentations and did not contain vital intelligence.

Still, the case remains under investigation by the FBI. As of now, Williams has been charged with disorderly conduct, illegally entering the Capitol, theft of government property, and obstruction. We will continue to provide updates as this interesting case develops.
