Misbar’s Analysis
On the first day of Biden’s presidency, he signed an executive order rejecting the 1776 commission report, about a week after its release on MLK Day. So, what’s the 1776 commission report and why did Biden view its removal as a first priority?
Following the BLM protests and the New York Times’ 1619 Project, Trump and a panel of conservative activists and public officials said that “liberal education” is responsible for instilling racial identity in students.
The creators of the 1776 Commission Report said that it is intended to promote “patriotic education” and teach “American exceptionalism.” The report asserts that the Civil Rights Movement went against the “Founding Fathers’ lofty ideals” by promoting identity politics. It also states that the women’s liberation movement did much of the same to foster identity politics. Released on MLK Day, it contends that identity politics go against the views of Martin Luther King, Jr., and is a comparable phenomenon to mass enslavement (below).
Many historians, scholars, and politicians found the report to be extremely problematic, with some calling it “political propaganda.” Because of this, Biden signed an executive order on his first day in office dismantling the commission. The report has since been removed from the White House website.
