Misbar’s Analysis

Bill Gates has long been a target of conspiracy theories and rumors, with the latest one circulating on social media calling the billionaire philanthropist a eugenicist spurting further conspiracies that he runs the WHO and practices medicine without a license. Eugenics is a philosophy that aims to cut out undesirable traits that lead to suffering or weaknesses by limiting people with these traits from reproducing. It is considered racially biased and discredited scientifically. Despite no evidence whatsoever being put forward, it appears this claim is linked to other theories that Gates started the virus to control the population and that he intends to put a microchip in vaccines for the same reason. Other speculations are that eugenics is linked to his father, William Gate Sr’s work as a board member of Planned Parenthood. Gates has previously addressed some accusations against him saying that “it’s almost hard to deny this stuff because it’s so stupid or strange that even to repeat it gives it credibility”.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been very involved in funding public health initiatives globally and the COVID-19 pandemic is no different, having pledged to donate $1.6 billion to the cause. It does not appear that Bill Gates or his foundation stand to profit from the pandemic nor can they influence who gets the vaccine or what it comprises, which raises the question of how would Bill Gates practice eugenics. According to their website, the Gates Foundation is guided by the belief that every life has equal value and they work to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. This would clearly go against the eugenics principle that some people have weaker traits than others and therefore would not share the same value.
