Emerging story

Social media users are claiming that the Chibok schoolgirls who were abducted seven years ago by Boko Haram have escaped.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar has discovered that some of the Chibok school girls abducted by Boko Haram nearly seven years ago have finally escaped, a father of one of the girls told CNN. Halima Ali Maiyanga, one of more than 100 young women still missing, called her father to say she and others had managed to flee Boko Haram militants Thursday.

According to InsideEdition.com, the girls were known as the “Chibok Girls” and were taken from their town by a terrorist raid in 2014. Nearly 300 girls were reported missing. Some girls escaped just after the raid while others were released in prisoner exchange deals in 2016 and 2017. A social media campaign known as #bringbackthegirls was started to pressure the release of all of the girls and even gained attention of former first lady Michelle Obama.

According to ABCnews.com, a parent of one of the girls, Malam Madu Mutta, said the Chibok community is anxiously awaiting the girls' arrival. "We were told they are currently with the security operatives. We are yet to know the numbers, but we are happy that some of them escaped," Mutta told reporters Friday. "So many other parents and relatives are coming from Chibok with hopes of meeting their daughters. Again, hope is risen that we can have some of them back again."

According to Africa.cgtn.com, the father of one of the missing schoolgirls said he had spoken to his daughter on the phone. The man said his daughter confirmed she had fled together with other captives. Those who managed to escape are believed to be in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, although there are still few details known about how they fled. The Nigerian military says it does not have in its custody any of the schoolgirls who have allegedly escaped from their abductors.
