The Claim

Singer Rihanna was holding up the flag of Pakistan.

Emerging story

In February 2021, Rihanna tweeted in support of farmers in India. She wondered why people weren’t talking about the Indian government blocking internet access to farmers in New Delhi protesting new agriculture reforms. These reforms are controversial, as they may lower crop selling profits to the benefit of larger corporations. Shortly thereafter, an image began to circulate around social media showing Rhianna holding up a Pakistani flag. This has led to some speculation that Rihanna is supporting Pakistan, commonly believed to be a geopolitical rival of India. It had since been shared all over social media.

Misbar’s Analysis

This image is photoshopped. The actual picture was taken in 2019 and shared on the International Cricket Council’s Twitter account. In the picture, Rihanna is holding up a flag of the West Indies. Rhianna is from Bridgetown, Barbados, which is located in the West Indies, so it makes complete sense that she’d be supporting the cricket team of her homeland.

It’s unknown who photoshopped the picture.
