Some on social media are saying that President Biden lied and falsely claimed he had been shot at in a recent speech.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar discovered that on February 4, 2021, President Biden, in a speech to State Department staff, said, "You have great personal courage. I’ve been with some of you when we’ve been shot at." On this day, he didn’t offer details about when he’d been shot at according to Fox News.
According to the NewYorkPost.com, this was not the first time this claim has stirred controversy. In a presidential debate in 2007, he also claimed he was “shot at” inside of Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone. He later revised the claim, saying that in fact, “I was near where a shot landed.”
According to the WashingtonTimes.com, when President Biden has been pressed for details about being shot at in the past, he said there were three incidents in Iraq in which, “he felt that he was shot at or might have been shot at.” One of them involved a “shot” landing outside the building where he and other senators were staying.
However, in 2009, according to the NewYorkTimes.com, then Vice President Biden was in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad when the area was attacked by rocket fire. The Vice President had just sat down for dinner with Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki when the rockets landed, wounding several people at a security company.
While President Biden may not have been an individual target, it appears he has visited areas in conflict with missiles that were incoming which may or may not have been aimed at him.
