Miscaptioned Photo: Maskless Tampa Mayor Castor
The photos were not taken during the Super Bowl (Getty Images).

The Claim

The photos below show Tampa Mayor Jane Castor maskless at the Super Bowl.

Emerging story

The claim went viral after Super Bowl LV.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found that the caption accompanying the viral image is incorrect. We conducted a reverse image search of the photo and found that, while it does depict Castor, it is actually taken at the Stanley Cup in September 2020.

Many have pointed out what they see as Castor’s hypocrisy, since she went maskless during the Stanley Cup but instated a mask mandate for Super Bowl celebrations. At the time of the Stanley Cup, however, the city did not require masks to be worn outdoors, since it was believed at the time that outdoor transmission was highly unlikely.

Although the image of a maskless Castor is not from the Super Bowl, but rather the Stanley Cup, the two sporting events were only months apart and both took place during the pandemic. This implies that social media users’ reactions to the maskless photo aren't completely unfounded. Therefore, we rate this claim as misleading.
