The Claim
Former President Donald Trump has been acquitted.
Emerging story
Rumors of Trump's acquittal by the Senate recently took off on social media. The impeachment trial centered on his alleged role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Misbar’s Analysis
According to TheGuardian.com, a divided Senate fell short of the two-thirds majority required to convict the former president of high crimes and misdemeanors. After five days of debate, seven Republicans joined every Democrat in declaring Trump guilty on the charge of “incitement of insurrection.”
In a statement issued by the former president: "This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country. No president has ever gone through anything like it, and it continues because our opponents cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago." He went on to say that his political journey will continue: “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people.”
According to Politico.com, Democrats had expressed hope that the evidence and the emotional appeals they made during the trial would move enough Republicans to convict Trump — a result they said was necessary to ward off future violence.
