The Claim

A statue has been erected of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in a tourist square in Moscow.

Emerging story

Recurring claims of a statue of ousted former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in the largest tourist square in Moscow, Russia.

The posts are accompanied by an image of Mubarak’s bronze statue, sitting in an armchair with three pyramids in the background.

The tweets claim that Mubarak was “honored by the greats” referring to Russia. The claims date back to as early as 2011 and as recently as this month.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar investigations found that the statue of Mubarak is located in the Egypt-Azerbaijan Friendship Park.

In the town of Khirdalan, 15 miles north of the capital, Baku, Azerbaijan, and not in Moscow, Russia.

The statue was erected in 2007, however after Mubarak was ousted and increasing opposition protest, in 2011 the statue was removed and replaced with an ancient Egyptian scribe as a dedication of the friendship between Baku and Cairo.

Although the statue did at one point exist, the location was incorrect and misleading. Currently, there is no statue of Mubarak is not in Russia nor Azerbaijan.

Misbar found the circulating claim fake.
