Emerging story
From Texas to Florida, there are reports of foreign citizens allegedly getting the COVID-19 vaccine before U.S. residents.
Misbar’s Analysis
Misbar has discovered that some states are reporting that foreign nationals with money and connections are flying into big cities, including Houston, San Diego, New York, and Miami for the COVID-19 vaccine. According to an investigation published in Click2Houston.com, there is some disagreement, but it probably is happening at least in some cities. For example, when the Governor of Texas was asked about foreign nationals receiving vaccines ahead of Texans, he said, “It’s clear that the vaccines the state of Texas has, or the providers in the state of Texas [have], those vaccines are intended for Texans.” However, in the same investigation, Mexico City-based Dr. Gabriel Rodriguez Weber told KPRC 2 Investigates that, “without a doubt, many are" flying in to receive the vaccine. According to Dr. Weber, the people who are traveling are “all of those with economic means or that have a contact.”
Those traveling to the U.S. in search of a vaccine are also coming from the north. In a statement to the MiamiHerald.com by a Toronto travel agent, “I think a whole new group of people that had no intentions of traveling South this year are now going to get the vaccine. My phone is ringing off the hook with people saying, ‘I’m going South.’”
However, some governments and municipalities are trying to make sure their residents are vaccinated first. For example, as of January 21, 2021, at least in Florida, you must show proof of at minimum part time residency in order to receive a vaccination according to ClickOrlando.com.
New York state is requiring identification and proof of residency to get vaccinated. According to NYCHealth.com, you must show proof of New York state residency such as state or government-issued ID, landlord statement, current rent receipt or mortgage records to be vaccinated.
Delaware is also requiring those looking for a vaccine to have a local connection. According to Delaware’s Department of Health: “Out-of-state residents must show proof of employment or proof that they access their health care here (for instance your primary care doctor or pharmacy is here) in order to get vaccinated in Delaware.”
