Emerging story
A screenshot is circulating showing a tweet that Andrew Yang (@AndrewYang) posted on January 31st saying, “Why do we call it New York? There isn’t an Old York. It should just be York.”
Twitter users have had mixed reactions to this comment, many laughing at the opportunity to change the name, while others were frustrated by the idea.
Misbar’s Analysis
Andrew Yang has been living in New York for 25 years where he has worked as an attorney, executive, and philanthropist. His love for the city eventually led him to run for Mayor. In his campaign, he seeks to make New York more affordable, safe, and fair.
With a following of more than 1.9M, Yang is a frequent Twitter user, often posting about volunteering, healthcare, and vaccines.
New York was named to honor the English Duke of York and Albany in 1664. Does Yang really wish to change it?
Yang’s spokesperson has denied that the screenshot is legitimate. Another of Yang’s posts, in which he suggested creating a more modern New York City flag, may have spurred someone to falsify this tweet.
In addition, when the tweet went viral, user @torriangray seemed to admit that he’d created it as a joke.
While there’s a chance Yang simply removed the post after it received some negative reactions, more evidence suggests that it was indeed falsified. As such, Misbar finds this claim to be fake.
