The Claim

A picture depicts an Egyptian soldier facing freezing temperatures in the line of duty.

Emerging story

An image has been circulating on social media particularly amongst Egyptian users claiming a soldier in a stone hut wearing a thick army uniform covered in snow.

Users claim that the soldier is an Egyptian soldier in Mount Saint Catherine in South Sinai, Egypt and that they are facing freezing temperatures with snow and frost.

The posts ask God to protect the soldiers serving at the borders and to return them to their families safely.

The claim has been circulating online since 2019.

Misbar’s Analysis

Based on a reverse image search, the soldier in the photo appears to be an Armenian soldier. The picture was taken in January 2016, it was shared to show the soldiers’ plight in protecting the border at -20 degree celsius temperature.

The image was also found on an Amranian Facebook page called Armeniens 100%.

Further investigations revealed that it is not currently snowing in Sinai as the picture claims.

The weather was ranged from 10 to 28 degrees celsius this week in South Sinai and is mostly sunny, further weakening the authenticity of the posts.

Misbar's team found the claim fake. The image is of an Armenian soldier taken 5 years ago.
