The Claim

Breast milk produced by women previously infected with the coronavirus contains “robust” COVID-19 antibodies.

Emerging story

A new study circulating online claims that breast milk from mothers infected or previously infected with COVID-19 contains antibodies.

One Twitter user claimed that her breast milk turned neon green after she contracted COVID-19, indicating the presence of antibodies. "My body knew it had to protect my baby from the virus," she wrote.

Misbar’s Analysis

Misbar’s investigation found the claim to be true. A study conducted by the American Society for Microbiology showed that milk produced by infected mothers is a beneficial source of Coronavirus antibodies IgG & IgA.

Participants and samples were collected from 18 women who had laboratory-confirmed diagnoses of COVID-19.

Dr. Natalie Shenker, a breast milk researcher at Imperial College London and co-founder of the Human Milk Foundation tweeted:

New study validates findings that high numbers of mothers produce IgA and IgG antibodies against #covid19 in their milk. Also shows that these milk samples neutralise COVID-19 when virus is spiked in.https://t.co/zGTvGg63Ol

In addition, the results support recommendations to continue breastfeeding during mild-to-moderate maternal COVID-19 illness. Milk likely provides specific immunologic benefits to infants.

The WHO further confirmed that the virus can still be passed from mother to infant. They recommend that if a mother with COVID-19 has just coughed over her exposed breast, she should gently wash the breast with soap and warm water before feeding.
